PatchDesk vs Jira, Zendesk, and Linear

Small teams usually buy two products: an issue tracker for engineering and a help desk for customers. Then they paste ticket numbers into Slack. PatchDesk is one $7-per-user product for both. New accounts get a 14-day free trial with every feature and no credit card. This page is for teams of roughly 3–30 people deciding whether that trade is worth it.

Competitor prices are published list prices as of August 2026. Confirm current numbers on each vendor’s site. PatchDesk is $7 per active user per month after the trial.

When to pick each one

Choose Jira if you run software like a program

Jira Software is the default for backlog, sprints, and custom workflows. The Free plan covers up to 10 users. Paid Standard starts around $8 per user per month. Jira is not a customer help desk. For that, Atlassian sells Jira Service Management as a second product, billed per agent. A five-person shop that wants both bugs and customer tickets usually ends up paying for two Atlassian seats stacks, plus time spent configuring them.

Pick Jira if your team already lives there, or if you need marketplace apps, advanced boards, and enterprise workflow. Pick PatchDesk if you want a ticket list and a customer inbox this afternoon without standing up JSM.

Choose Zendesk if support is the company

Zendesk is a customer-service platform. Support Team starts at $19 per agent per month for email-style ticketing. The Suite most teams actually buy starts at $55 per agent per month and adds messaging, phone, and a help center. There is no free forever plan. Zendesk does not replace an engineering issue tracker.

Pick Zendesk if you staff a support org and need channels beyond a web form and email. Pick PatchDesk if a small team answers customers and files bugs, and you do not want a $55-per-seat desk plus Linear or Jira on the side.

Choose Linear if engineering is the only customer

Linear is a fast issue tracker. The Free plan is real, with caps (a couple of teams and a few hundred issues). Basic is $10 per user per month on annual billing. It is excellent at cycles, keyboard-driven triage, and GitHub-shaped work. It is not a customer support desk. Linear Asks exists on higher plans for intake; it is not a branded “no account required” portal with SLA and macros.

Pick Linear if you only track engineering work and already have another place for customers. Pick PatchDesk if a support email has to become a bug without leaving the product.

Choose PatchDesk if you need both, cheaply

PatchDesk is $7 per active user per month. One plan includes unlimited issues, unlimited support tickets, a public customer portal, SLA, macros, MFA, roles, and CSV import/export. A 14-day trial does not require a card.

You give up Linear’s polish, Jira’s workflow engine, and Zendesk’s omnichannel suite. Help articles live in the knowledge base. There is no phone or live chat. If that list does not describe your next six months, the simpler desk is the point.

A five-person example

Five people who handle customers and ship software. PatchDesk is $35 per month. Linear Basic for those five is about $50 per month on annual billing, and you still need a desk. Zendesk Suite Team for two agents is $110 per month before you buy an issue tracker. Jira Software Standard for five plus Jira Service Management for two agents is two invoices and more setup. The gap is not “we are cheaper than Jira on every axis.” The gap is you stop buying two categories.

Questions

Is PatchDesk a Jira alternative?
For a small team that wants a simple issue list with status, priority, comments, and CSV, yes. It is not a Jira replacement if you live in sprints, advanced workflows, or the Atlassian marketplace.
Is PatchDesk a Zendesk alternative?
For email-style tickets, a public portal, SLA, macros, and internal notes, yes. It is not a Zendesk replacement if you need phone, live chat, social, or a large help center.
Is PatchDesk a Linear alternative?
Only if you also need a customer desk. Linear is a better dedicated engineering tracker. PatchDesk is the better pick when support tickets and bugs have to live in one product.
Why is PatchDesk $7 per user?
One plan, no per-agent premium, no add-on for the portal or SLA. You pay for people on the team, not for unlocking the product.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. Every new PatchDesk account gets 14 days with full access to every feature. No credit card is required. After the trial it is $7 per active user per month.
